Update for the Week of June 28

Wanted to pass along the following notes:

  • Firstly, I'm very excited to announce that I'll be attending an AP Summer Institute workshop for Calculus AB the week of July 19. It's being held in downtown Chicago at Northwestern Unviersity's Chicago campus. Excited for the opportunity, to learn from experienced AP Calculus instructors, to hone my calculus skills, and to see the Windy City.
  • I'm planning on getting into our classroom (A121) in the coming weeks to get our classroom ready for the upcoming school year. I'm expecting our classroom to have a document camera installed, and I'm very excited to have the opportunity to teach with it.
  • On a personal note, I'm about to become an uncle! My brother Rusty and his wife are expecting their first child (and my first nephew) any day now. Looking forward to travelling to the Charlotte area to see my brother and his family (including their new addition) in the coming weeks.
  • I'm reading two books that I think will only help me become a more effective educator. One is Unknown Quantity by John Derbyshire, which tells the history of the development of algebra. The other is Mathletics by Indiana University Kelley School of Business professor Wayne L. Winston. Winston has served as a consultant for Mark Cuban, the well-known owner of the Dallas Mavericks. Mathletics discusses how managers and sports professionals use mathematics in their analysis of decisions. Both books are well worth the time spent reading them.
